Martina Cole visits Barberry Centre

Published: 20/05/2014

Best-selling author Martina Cole gave a lively and engaging talk about her career and love of reading at the Barberry Centre as part of the Reading Agency’s Six Book Challenge tour.

Martina, who is the official ambassador for the challenge, spoke with staff and service users about her childhood and what inspired her to take up writing.

Around 35,000 people take part annually in the Six Book Challenge, which aims to encourage young people and adults who might not otherwise pick up a book to develop a love of reading and improve their literacy skills at the same time.

“We are delighted to have had Martina Cole come and visit Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust as part of the Six Book Challenge,” says Helene Gorring, head of library services.

“The Six Book Challenge has been a great initiative for the library to get involved with, and one which has enthused staff from a wide variety of job roles. The Challenge has encouraged participants to read things they would not have usually chosen and in some cases helped them get back into reading for pleasure.  We are very pleased to have been able to extend the Six Book Challenge to our service users this year, with a mixture of inpatient and community-based reading groups taking part”.
