Eating Disorders Service

The Eating Disorders Service (TEDS) is based at Freshfields. We offer assessment and treatment to young people under 18 years who are registered with a GP in the borough of Solihull,

The majority of eating disorders (EDs) begin to develop during adolescence. They can do great damage to young people’s long term physical and emotional health, and affect social and educational inclusion. The effects can be lifelong or life threatening.

Early identification and appropriate intervention for children and young people (CYP) and their families can prevent the condition from escalating and can avoid long term damage or the condition continuing into adulthood. It is associated with better outcomes and a higher recovery rate than in later years.

The most cost effective treatment of eating disorders is reported to be delivered by a community based specialist eating disorder service (TEDS).

The term ‘eating disorder’ refers to a number of different conditions having in common a disturbance either in attitude toward or relationship with food, weight and/or shape. There are a diverse range of symptoms varying in severity as well as impact on physical, psychological, social and educational functioning.

Children and young people who are referred to the service with a suspected eating disorder, developmental eating difficulty or eating disturbance should receive a comprehensive assessment and treatment package which is in line with best available evidence and professional knowledge.

All care delivered by the service will take into account the preferences and individual needs of the child or young person and the wishes of their parents and/or carers.
