Today we are celebrating Jeny John, Staff Nurse, who was nominated by Luke Overton, Ward Manager. Luke said:

“Jeny started last year on Melissa as an Internationally Educated Nurse, she has adapted fantastically to working within a new culture and country. She is kind and caring and put the needs of our patients at the forefront of her care delivery. She has brought a new perspective to our cultural awareness on the ward due to her lived experiences.

Jeny abides and lives by our Trust Values within her work. Jeny has also been extremely supportive in helping other Internationally Educated Nurses settle into the workplace and is a fantastic role model and advocate for those that she has supported. I believe she is well deserving of an award for her contributions to the team over the past 12 months.”

Jeny was asked to share a bit more about her heritage and what it means to her. Jeny said:

“I was born and raised in Kerala, often referred to as “God’s own country,” is a state located in the southwestern part of India. Known for its stunning backwaters, lush green landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, Kerala is a prominent tourist destination. The people of Kerala, called ‘Malayalis’, are known for their high literacy rate, progressive mindset and diverse traditions. I can state with pride that I am multilingual. Malayalam, which is my mother tongue, and Arabic, which I can understand and use to communicate fluently. I am also able to comprehend two other Indian languages.

The traditional food of Kerala is my favourite thing about the state. During my vacation, spicy fish curry and creamy coconut-based dishes were a must-have. Another thing that I love about Kerala is the harvest festival, Onam. Typically, my family joins me in celebrating Onam, and I adore donning traditional saris.

For me SAHM is reflection on my identity. SAHM helps foster a deeper appreciation of my heritage and promotes cultural understanding and unity.”
