In 1948, the NHS was born, providing healthcare services that are free for all at the point of entry. Today (5 July), the NHS marks 76 years of service.

This milestone presents us with the opportunity to showcase and thank the generations of people who make up our workforce and recognise their remarkable work and dedication to patients and service users.

NHS mental health services have continually adapted to suit the needs of each generation it meets. Through closures of the old asylums, moving care into the community, increasing the use of talking therapies, digital advancements and much more, change has always been important to us.

One thing that has never changed however, is the commitment of our colleagues. Today, we not only celebrate the great institution that is the NHS, but the thousands of colleagues and volunteers who go above and beyond each and every day to support people to live the best life they possibly can. It’s the people who make us.

Please let us know how you are celebrating today by tagging us on social media and using the hashtags #NHS76 #TeamBSMHFT.

We’d also like to take the opportunity to promote the 350 different career opportunities available across the NHS in England. Explore the range of health care roles today. We are the NHS.
