Gold: Fez Sookia

After working at BSMHFT for 40 years and the NHS for over 50, Fez Sookia was nominated for a Compassionate Award for the incredible support he has demonstrated to not only our service users, but their loved ones and our staff members too.

Originally from Mauritius, Fez now works part time, following his retirement as Ward Manager in 2004 and is believed to be the longest serving member of the Trust.

Fez is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner within the Mental Health Services for Older People’s Community Mental Health team. He is an empathetic employee and considerate to all as evidenced by the numerous positive comments and thank you letters that often come from patients and their relatives.

Fez also coaches medical students who are inspired by his professionalism and commitment to his patients.

Silver: Aluya Ikhena

Aluya Ikhena is Interim Matron at our Ardenleigh Women’s Service. Aluya takes a thoughtful and compassionate approach to the care he gives to his patients in the women’s service, always putting the patients at the centre of his thinking.

He often brings a fresh perspective to the care of longer stay patients which has led to less restrictive approaches to care and in some cases progress to community discharge.

During his time as Ward Manager on Tourmaline, he led on the transformation of the ward, making it a more homely and rehabilitation-focussed environment.

Even in the most challenging situations, Aluya remains true to himself, showing kindness, empathy, and support.

Bronze: Emma Matthews

Emma Matthews is a Mental Health Commissioning Support Manager for the Mental Health Provider Collaborative. Emma was nominated by an individual who had recently received some devastating news prior to joining the Trust. Whilst navigating this news and adapting to remote working, Emma provided an exceptional level of support.

Emma demonstrated kindness by actively listening, offering assistance, acknowledging personal achievements and being empathetic in challenging situations. She fosters a positive and inclusive work environment that values open communication and trust.

During times where the nominator felt like giving up, Emma provided them with encouragement which helped them to thrive in their role.
